Design Spotlight: The Stratus Cowl ( a free pattern)

As part of my retrospective celebration I want to spend some time talking about how my patterns and designs work, and how they may differ from other patterns out there. It’s one of the trickiest things about searching for patterns, that simply looking at the finished product tells you next to nothing about what goes into making it. So, I thought it might be helpful to talk through the Stratus Cowl pattern as an introduction to my design process and my principles of pattern-writing.

It’s been 10 years and more than 100 patterns since I first started Into the Wool.

A basic recipe and photo tutorial for a sturdy, elegant, double-faced stockinette buttonband and a matching self-reinforced buttonhole. This band can be applied to most cardigans (crew-neck or v-neck) and works at a wide variety of gauges. Since this band is applied after your sweater is finished there is no need to match a specific gauge or stitch pick up ratio.

Bavarian cables are small, nimble and light on their feet and a hat crown is an ideal place to show off their ability to wend their way towards a decrease point.

If you wish to knit a collar that is separate from your sweater (rather than picking up stitches from the neckline), attaching it using back stitch makes a neat, decorative finish. Knitting a collar separately allows you to use your cast on as the finished edge of the collar, which can open up a lot of interesting possibilities.
