Nuala

$10.00

Nuala is a yoke sweater knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up. The fit is tailored but relaxed with an elegantly sloped neckline.

Nuala is a name derived from Irish mythology and is possibly a diminutive of Fionnuala, meaning “fair shoulder” or an alternate name for Úna, which perhaps means “lamb”. Either way it seems an appropriate name for a shoulder-focused piece of knitwear.

A note on yarn substitution: The sample is shown in a 50/50 blend of new and recycled cashmere that knits up at 22 sts over 4” on a size 7 needle. Any yarn that yields the same gauge can be used so both DK and worsted weights might be acceptable substitutes, however the original yarn has both excellent bloom and drape so those are qualities to look for when substituting. As ever, swatch and see.

SIZE 1, (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

FINISHED SIZE 33 ½ (37, 40¾ , 44 ¼, 48, 51 ½, 55 ¼, 59, 62 ½)“
bust circumference.

Sweater shown (size 3) measures 40¾“ modeled with 6” of positive ease. Intended to be worn with 3–6” positive ease.

YARN DK or worsted weight yarn in the following approximate amounts:
Main Color (MC): 1100 (1190, 1280, 1400, 1535, 1635, 1760, 1875, 2010) yards
Contrast Color 1 (CC1): 80 yds
Contrast Color 2 (CC2): 50 yds
Contrast Color 3 (CC3): 35 yds
Contrast Color 4 (CC4): 35 yds

Sample made with Jones and Vandermeer Ethos Cashmere (50% virgin cashmere & 50% recycled cashmere; 160 yds/50g);
7 (8, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13) skeins Grey No. 4 (MC) and 1 skein each of White (CC1), Grey No.1 (CC2), Grey No. 2 (CC3) and Grey No. 3 (CC4)

NEEDLES
Main Fabric Needle: Suggested size US 7 (4.5 mm), 16”, 24” and 32” circular and set of double-pointed (dpn)

Ribbing Needle: Suggested size US 5 (3.75mm), 16” circular and set of double-pointed (dpn)

Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Three markers and one unique marker for beginning of round (m); removable m; stitch holders; waste yarn; tapestry needle.

GAUGE
22 stitches and 30 rounds = 4” in single color stockinette stitch on Main Fabric Needle.

25 stitches and 26 rounds = 4” in charted colorwork pattern on Main Fabric Needle.

NOTES
This pullover is worked in the round from lower edge to the underarms. The sleeves are worked separately in the round, then the sleeves and body are joined to work the yoke. Shaped it integrated into the colorwork yoke chart.

SKILLS: knitting in the round, increasing/decreasing, stranded colorwork, chart reading, kitchener stitch (optional)
